Ask Chris Lang anything you like about Google Friend Connect and Google Social Networking right here on the GFC Tactics blog
UPDATE: Google Friend Connect Is Closing in an announcement from Google on all sites except Blogger, spring, 2012…
As I a Google Friend Connect networking authority I get a lot of questions about GFC and the networking features in Google.
So rather than carry on this constant conversation in email I am taking all questions here where we can all benefit from what is not know and what we want to know.
So, I used the new Google Social Networking questions gadget at the link above.
Just scroll down to the end of the Googling Social section at the top and you will see the questions gadget just below the buy link.
Will you enter any questions you have there?
I already had a GFC on my blog. And after the replacement, I have 2 instances of GFC with different sets of followers.. Is there a way to integrate the followers in both the GFC widget? Or is this something on which google is still working??
@Simply Riduculous,
You are probably talking about the change over from the followers widget to the GFC widget.
I just took a look at you blog and really cannot see what you mean.
Previously, I had the GFC social bar at the top of the page and the classic followers widget… After the replacement,I have two GFCs.. One is the GFC (previously followers) and the GFC social bar.. Both of them show different followers.. I would like to have a single GFC with integrated followers..
I’d like to add GFC to my Tumblelog http://ivanfilios.tumblr.com but I cann not find a way to do it. I’ve followed the instructions on http://www.google.com/friendconnect/ but I do not know hot to upload the files to my site. Do you know hot to add GFC to a tumblelog?
Thank you for your attention,
@ivan_filios
Chris Lang says:
I am sorry to say that until Tumblr gives you FTP access you are not going to be able to use Google Friend Connect.
Unless Tumblr either enables the files you need or adds Google Friend Connect APIs you are not going to be able to run GFC on the site. You should probably start by contacting Tumblr to ask if this is possible.
If you want to use Google Friend Connect on a free blogging platform I would consider creating a Blogger blog. Log onto Bloogger.com using the Gmail address you are using to log into Friend Connect gadgets on other sites.
That way you Google Profile and you Blogger account will be connected and associated with one another. Hope this helps Francisco. – Chris Lang
@Simply Ridiculous
When you have an entry in a database, and that is what GFC widgets are, entries in Google’s database on you behalf, there is a unique identifying entry.
So the Followers widget (which I told everyone would become GFC in 9/2008) has it’s own ID and so does any GFC widgets you create.
Unless Google is willing to merge the two, then no, you will not be able to combine them.
My suggestion since you only have 13 entries in the followers widget would be to contact each one and ask them to move to the other. The email address connected to the profile is available if the owner so decides.
I myself am keeping both because I want to see if something different is going to come of the two widgets.
It was the followers widget that after all started adding the RSS feed of the parent blog to Google Reader by default. It is going to be interesting to see if that original GFC feature is going to continue or not.
Thanks for the info.. I think it would be better to keep both the GFCs as you suggested..
Hi!
I discovered the adding friends in google reader. But can I define which
feeds I want to share with whom?
I mean, I have some friends in real life that are sharing different passions
with me. Some are Harry-potterfans, and are reading English, some other
friends of mine are family or friends, and can’t read English.
Can I define some groups of friends e.g. group A, and share feeds a, b, and c with them,
and define a second group (group B) of friends and share feeds d, e and f with this group B?
If I can do that, how to do this?
In orcut you can define different groups of friends, but can you do the same
in google reader? And will the friends in orcut and google reader be merged with the gfc-friends and blogger followers? In your gfc tutorial you told us, that all the google services will be merged into one another after a certain period. Did I understand this correctly?
Thanks in advance for the help.
Katty
@Katty
As far as I know it is all or nothing in Google Reader. Again Katty, you are making this harder on yourself than it needs to be.
You can share things in Reader that are of interest to all. If you want to share with just a subset or a few, then email the link thru the Gmail link at the bottom just like the “share” button.
The last time I checked, you are supposed to bring enough to share with the whole class, not just your buddies.
You can organize friends into groups now in Gmail and let me suggest you all start using GMAIL for your admin. (I can see you do Katty, nice!).
I see many of you are using OpenID logins by the fact you do not use your Gmail address when you comment. (no one gets your login to GFC but Google BTW)
Why are you not using Gmail when you lose out on the social features of by using OpenID or Yahoo?
What part of this whole thing are you not getting? When you become mutual friends thru a GFC widget you both get added to the other’s contacts. Why break that?
When you enter my members only tutorial you are going to wish you had taken that advice now, not later.
Think about social bookmarking sites like Digg, do you Digg an item for just a few people to see?
No, you share it with the whole community and that is what Reader sharing is about.
I am a BattleStar Galactica nutt, I frakin love the show. But until lately I have really had no one to share it with. I just discovered that some of my best business contacts are huge fans.
You discover new friends thru social interaction, new business contacts, new relationships and you discover NEW interests yourself by your friends sharing.
Do you know how many people laugh when I tell them the new BSG is the best show on TV? Go rent the season one frakin disc, branch out, have a few laughs. Try something new guys, that is what being social is all about.
If you want to just share with your existing contacts we can do that the old way thru email and IM.
Why not branch out and share and try new things and recommend what can bring new experiences into the lives of your new GFC friends?
Hope that all makes sense Katty!
Chris,
This is great that you are doing this!
How can we keep notified of updates to these comments? Do we subscribe through our Google Reader accounts?
Hi Rocque,
I just enabled this WordPress function that creates a RSS feed for each set of blog post comments.
You will see a link like this above every comment form on every blog post. It is unique to each post / article.
Here is the link for this comment thread, I expect it to be a GFC FAQ and bring us all allot of information we need.
http://googlingsocial.com/?feed=rss2&p=184
I also expect it to bring me closer to all of you since I may be a little too close to the GFC flame.
I hope I can help us all with this thread.
A pleasure as always Rocque! – Chris Lang
Chris:
Thank you for your answer. I must say your are the first person to give me a clear answer on this topic (GFC/Tumblr integration). I do have a Blogger blog http://ivanfilios.blogspot.com and since using GFC my follower count went from two to 28. I have met a lot of wonderful people through GFC.
Thank you again for taking the time to answer my question. It’s now up to Tumblr.
@ivan_filios
I have added the social bar at the bottom of my blog and also the WordPress plugin.
How will these 2 Google Friend Connect tools bring more traffic to my blog?
Chris:
1. I did not find yeat how to enable
comments with gfc at Blogger.
2. Is there rss feeds for fgc
activities? New friends, comments,
sites joined… I did not find
anything at Google blogs/codes.
Thanks in advance,
Best regards,
Joao

@Vincent,
I hate to say this but this is exactly what my members only site teaches you step by step.
I will not reveal hardly any of this for fear of others reverse engineering what my subscribers pay for.
The more I tell on how that works the more the wannabees reverse engineer my tactics and then publish it as blog posts claiming THEY are GFC experts.
Most of what you already read about how mutual GFC friends are added to Gmail contact and Google Reader sharing backlinks to your site is all just others publishing what I wrote about in July 2008.
Hence I am very hesitant to let more than that go.
However think about this:
Robert Scoble, the first to market on Twitter has over 3000 GFC contacts in Gmail and 3000 friends sharing in Google Reader.
Think mailing list and think how many Google Shared items link back to Scoble’s site.
Also, the man that discovered Twitter 3 years ago is also the most powerful user of Google social networking applications.
Need I say more?
http://googlingsocial.com/gfc-tactics.php
One of my friends (in real life) accepted my gfc friends-invitation and became a follower of my blog. But how to befriend that follower? In gfc I can’t manage it to do it, because I can’t see “a face to click on”, my screenreader doesn’t show me photo’s, nor I can find the name of the person to click on, when I enable the link list, I only see links that aren’t very descriptive in what will happen if I click on them. Is there a workaround? Could I use google reader or another tool to befriend my followers? I know I make things harder than I should, but I got lost in inaccessible swamps of visual and flashy things. Thanks in advance for the help.
Katty,
All I can recommend is to use the GFC friend short cut.
That is to add the gmail address to chat, or add them to a latitude request.
That will make them mutual friends and such a strong two way relationship in Google friend that you will bypass any GFC friend process.
We have been using this for over a year now and it is way easier than any other method.
In fact it was this method that alerted us to what Google was really doing.
My next door neighbor were using Gchat to be able to IM from our machines and share online items instead of using email.
And we both used Google Reader. One day we both saw that Google had made us Google Reader friends.
In fact most of what I teach in my members only site is geared towards NOT using GFC widgets but using Gmail and other Google properties to make friends.
For some reason I am not getting the gmail addresses of the friends I make on Friend Connect, This is what I was referring to when I said that I am waiting to explore the full potential.
Am I missing something or is it only Beta testers like you and Simon Ford who have full access to Google Friend Connect
hope you can answer this questions as its been bugging me for ages
@Ian David Chapman,
Just because you friend someone does not mean they will friend you back. You must become mutual friends for the email address of your new friend to show up in Gmail.
Also, the now mutual friend must also be using Gmail to complete the Gmail loop.
Many people are using Yahoo addresses and Open ID to log into GFC widgets. When they do that they lose the social features available to them and then the friendship is worthless.
The best we can do to improve this as marketers is thru education. You can simply send subscribers thru my process with the free tutorial available at the top right of this or any page here.
I also have a number of PLR articles you can use to educate your subscribers and visitors. Just contact me and I will email you back a link where you can download and republish these instructional articles free.

Unfortunately, gmail chat is only available in the standard view, not in basic html, and the first one is less accessible for me than the latter. And what about a “latitude request”? Sorry, but where could I find a link for making such a request? Is that the lab thing in gmail I must activate? Or how do I make such a request? Thanks in advance for the help.
I was trying to install the GFC widget, but I skipped the step where I was asked to install the 2 files. Then I got this message: “We were unable to locate required files at the Home URL”
Can someone help me??

@Tina C,
You have to FTP the files to your blog. That means you have to upload the files to the root.
Move the cavas and rpc file to the root of the site.
In CPANEL (99% of all hosting) that means the public_html folder.
At GoDaddy it is your top level folder and you can use the FTP utility GoDaddy or most other hosts supply in CPANEL.
If it is a Blogger blog just add the Followers widget, that is actually GFC now and always has been. I published on this back in September O8.
If you do not understand how to FTP or what that is call your hosting tech support and they will guide you thru it.
These options should take care of the problem whatever platform you are on.

Hey thanks for the clarification. I thought GFC is different from Google Followers. =)
Hey thanks for the clarification. I thought GFC is different from Google Followers. =)
GFC is different than Google Followers, since it is part of a Google property I would bet it will have few cool features that GFC widgets on our Blogs do not.
Right from the beginning the followers widget has added your RSS feed to you Followers Google Reader.
GFC has done this at times, then the feature disappears. I expect the followers widget to be the test bed for GFC just as it was back in 2008 when it was used to test GFC before we saw a full release.
Checkout the video I shot at 6am after being up all night playing with GFC on Blogger way before anyone else saw it. There were exactly 4 blogs running GFC at the time but I caught Google testing GFC in the followers witgets at 2am. That is what got me started on GFC. Only I saw this, we still don’t know why…

My first video as well, I had just bought the cam.
Hi Chris,
Could you hint, how I can return email account of user, when I return registration data from Google or Yahoo to my site through GFC?
Thank you in advance

Hi Chris. I’m merging two blogs (importing one into the other) and I’m wondering if there’s a way to merge the two seperate Friend Connect/Followers? I’d prefer not to use an outside source (like Feedburner) if I don’t have to. Thanks so much for your help!
Blessings… Polly
@Pally,
All you can do is educate your visitors. Before you move on blog to the other, let them know it is moving.
Also be sure to use the proper 301 redirects for the content that moves, that way your links follow you to the new site.
By the way, how many GFC followers are we talking?

@Vittor,
If your GFC members wanted you to have their email address, they would give it to you.
Do not darken the doors of this site again asking spammer questions like these.

As of this moment, there’s exactly 100 followers. Hmmm.. too bad we can’t merge them somehow. ~Polly
I guess I should clarify… 100 on the blog that’s being imported. There’s about 90 on the blog that that will be the “new” blog. ~Polly

Hi Chris …. Please, can you tell me how to add the Social Bar to Blogger (blogspot, no custom domain)?!? I’ve tried everything, including a tutorial on socialbar-enabled.blogspot.com but the social bar is still not working properly. Possibly I do not have the correct site id number …. because I can see a ‘place holder’ where the bar should be, just no data.
Is the canvas working on blogger hosted blogs as of this date? I want a fully interactive comments tool for followers, preferably that will show their icons.
How do I create the ‘auto-reply’ to new followers?
THANKS!! THANKS!! THANKS!!

I hope you can help me. I started blogging in February, and Friend Connect was automatically added to my blog soon after that.
It seemed ok at first. Now, however, each time I get a new follower, GFC erases a follower or followers. Sometimes, followers try to rejoin, but in their own words “google won’t cooperate.” One follower even reappeared in her old spot (she had joined in February).
Thank you. I hope you can help.

Hi Chris,
I have 40 or 50 mutual friends via followers / gfc from my blog and my main site (www.highton-ridley.co.uk).
None of these show up in my gmail contacts.
Just to make sure I’m not going nuts, I set up another gmail account, joined the h-r site using it and immediately sent a friend request to the ‘real’ me. I then signed out, signed in again as the real me and accepted the friend request.
Signed out and then signed in again as the new account.
No sign of the real me anywhere in my new gmail account. Signed out, signed in again as the real me, checked my gmail contacts – no sign of the ‘new’ me anywhere in my contacts.
I’ve been to various Google help forums to ask for help and all I’m told by the (non-google) folk who’ve replied is that it doesn’t happen for them either and there’s no substance to it.
You’re not nuts either, so what is going on?
Cheers,
Mark
When I joined your website through the GFC Social Bar at the bottom, I thought it was going to automatically add your feeds to my Google Reader. Is that supposed to be correct? I don’t see your site in my Google Reader at the moment, even though I’ve joined your GFC…

Today, I consulted my gfc-account and site settings. I’m using gfc with my blogspot-blog but when I follow the steps to control the site settings, and I save and test the settings, I got the message that the files I had to upload aren’t uploaded, although I’m using the followers gadget of blogger, and the fact that I read on gfc-fora that the files for gfc are included in blogspot-blogs automatically. What’s going wrong? I also can’t delete a blog or website in gfc-account and redo the whole thing. Would it help to delete the blogger followers gadget and re-install it later? If I do that, will I loose my followers?

@Katty, just add the Followers gadget, the files are already there. Don’t test for them, just and the gadget. It works first time out.
The test for files link is there for those who own domains on hosted sites.
The followers gadget is NOT the members gadget in GFC’s site.
The Followers gadget on Blogger is a Blogger gadget.
Two different things. Here is a link to the exact instructions, oddly enough, right here on this site.

Off course I am always here to help you Katty, use this page if it is not a private question, since I know you can’t use the JavaScript based questions gadget on this page:

Hi Chris, with the advent of Google’s global conversations, what do you think are the benefits of being the one to start conversations?
See the “SEO” and “Social Marketing” conversations I’ve started.
For those who don’t know how, a quick way is to go to http://www.google.com/webelements/social/conversation/ and paste in the either of the two without the quotes and make sure “share across the web” is selected.
…And you can start your own conversations that way, too. Leave a comment, and ‘book’ your place!
I hope your answer is a very positive one, Chris, as I’ve bagged quite a few (with real content as my opening, of course).
Cheers,
–Mark

Roland asked me over on KeyWebData.com:
“I am in the process of integrating GFC into my site. The developer I am working with, keeps pointing out that GFC is (and will) slow down our site dramatically. ie, page loads will be a lot slower.
http://www.id8games.com
Is this true? Is there a way to avoid this (slow loading pages) ?
I personally don’t believe Google would launch a product which would slow down page loads.
Thank you in advance,
Roland”
@Roland,
Everything you add to a site slows it down. Took a look at it and am playing a few games now. LOl
What I suggest is yes, add Google Friend Connect. But I would just add it to the main page, and add the social bar too. But only to the main page. Then if you would like add it to some sub pages. Or build one page just for certain items, like the events gadget.
Or you could add a WordPress blog in a subdirectory and run GFC across the board, that way you would get a nice community based of GFC, write about new releases or posts that the game industry would be interested in.
Also there is little reason to run the share this gadget on the page. Most of what you have cannot be submitted to social bookmarking sites.
I WOULD use a hand coded, nofollowed, Twitter / Facebook links on every page. That way they take little resources, and you would get the viral affect of the shouts.
GFC does not slow down the site by taking it’s resources. It does slow down the site by taking TIME to compile thru the browser’s JavaScript compiler on the client’s machine.
Every JavaScript addition to any page WILL slow it down.
However take a look at this site. It has tons of JavaScript GFC gadgets on it, is on about the slowest crappy GoDaddy server there is and loads just fine.
I did take a look at your site and all the pages load great, it is the actual game page that loads slowly so don’t add anything to those pages.
Also so not judge GFC by what it’s performance this weekend (6-14-2009). I can see that it is undergoing an upgrade as it is slow to load right now. This is a good thing, it means we are getting something new and shiny.
Keep your eyes open this week….

Chris can you please help me with this??
My GFC widget suddenly says “join” instead of “follow” and “members” instead of “followers”.
I’m desperate to change it back and can’t find the answer anywhere.
Thanks,
Jane
@Jane,
It has done the same to me, no way to change it, it comes down from Google via JavaScript.
Nice call, the small stuff like this is what gets past me.
Anytime Google changes things like this it usually means something new is coming.
It may be the the Google Reader auto follow is now NOT part of the GFC gadget. This feature comes and goes in the last year but it is still part of the Blogger Followers / GFC gadget.
I will try to get to the bottom of this thru the GFC group.

@Melissa,
Got it for you, it is called the Recommendation gadget. Real cool I use it on my Google Friend Connect Tactics / Surf Club / members site.
Just log into the Google Friend Connect parent site and then look for the recommendation gadget. I would be using it here on this blog but it kind of takes over the sidebar and I already have a ton of JavaScript running here.
I am going to find a way to implement it here soon though…

Thanks, Chris, for replying so quickly! However, it appears as though the Recommendation gadget shows recommendations from all users, and I only want the person logged in to see their specific recommendations. Is their a way to limit it so that it only shows the recommendations of the logged in party? Thanks, M

@Melissa,
You have two choices:
Code a custom GFC gadget. If you can’t write code then you will have to hire someone.
Or code a custom addition to your site that does not depend on GFC.
The deciding factor would be how GFC targeted is the site as to GFC users?
This site is perfect for Google Friend Connect gadgets, it’s about FriendConnect.
GFC will be way popular when Google Wave comes out in 60 days on September 30th.
Either way that sounds like a custom coded gadget to me.
The beauty of GFC here is that the log in would be easily done, instead of having to create yet another log in, password and account.
I would not waste my time with something that made me create an account. Hope this helps.
If you need a Google Friend Connect developer just Google it and you should be able to find someone for cheap.
Hello Chris,
I’m very thankful about your knowledge sharing..
I have one question..
I’m developing a website which allows users to join with GFC.
But, if users want, they can maintain
their personal profile on my website (like social networking sites)
My question is “How I can synchronize GFC user with my website database?”
that is, how I can make an entry of GFC user into my website DB?
Thanks in adv.
@Swapnil Naik,
At heart I am a programmer, but it is not what I do now. I am all about what Google is doing, not the coding side of it.
I can pretty much tell you that all this is built around oAuth and OpenSocial protocols. Just Google OpenSocial and Friend Conncect API and that will get you to Google’s code base and dev site.
That should do it. With Google Wave coming soon the GMail log in will be way more popular not to mention a web OS and Google OS looming just means even more adoption.

How can I move the friend connect widget down the sidebar of my blog. I don’t want it at the top.
Ann, just edit the layout of the blog and drag the Follower gadget down the page to a lower location.
I do want to let you know that when people join your the Google Friend Connect members gadget it adds the RSS feed to Google Reader.
That is why it is very important to position it prominently.
Up to you…..

Hi,
I am hoping you can help me. I want to move my blog from blogger to wordpress.com, and am wondering if it is possible to move my google friend connect to wordpress.com without loosing my registered followers? Am also trying to find ways to move my content to wordpress.com. Do you know of any help resources for this?
Thank you so much for any help you can give me.

Why would you want to move from Blogger top WordPress.com? WordPress.com is no better than Blogger.
Secondly you will not be able to use any type of add ons there, WordPress.com is yet another hosted, free blog. If you are going to make a move, it would be best to get your own domain and use WordPress on a standalone site. So forget Facebook Like gadgets, Google Friend Connect and the like, I doubt they will ever run at WordPress.com.

I have a possibly stupid question but do I have to log into Friend connect to connect to google chat? Are they tied together? If not, if I want to get into friend connect, do I physically have to log in to an additional website? Thanks for your help.

Hi Chris,
I really could use your help using the GFC Interest API…I know how to use poll, but I can not figure out how to use the ID to get just a specific interest question on my site! I want to put to pictures up against one another and let me GFC members vote on which one they like better. The Guitar Universe example is exactly what I would like to do. I do not know what I can not get this to work. If you could send me the html I would need with say to sample pictures…and identify the elements I will need to change you would help me a ton. This is pretty urgent and I would like to move forward. I look forward to your follow up.
Thank you,
Steven H.

Hi’I have two google friend connect gadgets on my blog, how do I consolidate into one, without losing members? Thanks
Dear Chris,
I have installed the Friends connect to my recent website and some of my friends have posted their comments 3 days ago, now when I opened it again I found there are three new comments and the old two have Gone!!!
Is there any limit time for the posts to be erased then?
Kindly advice as I don’t want any comments to be removed or at least in this case I will try to get some other script to do this work..
Thanks and best regards

Firas, sorry to do this to you, but I do want to point out Google Friend Connect is closing this spring for sites not on Blogger. Here is the full story…
